Mechanical Biological Treatment
For many years, Shanks has used Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) technology to treat Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), in partnership with Italian company Sistema Ecodeco.
MBT technology uses the heat generated naturally during biological degradation to dry and stabilise MSW. It therefore requires no external source of heat and has relatively low energy requirements. Recyclates are separated from the dry and stabilised waste before Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is produced from the remaining material.
