Problem

Each year Cumbria households throw away approximately 300,000 tonnes of waste.

To meet Government targets and avoid fines, Cumbria County Council must recycle/compost 45% by 2010 and 67% by 2015.

Landfill produces methane, a greenhouse gas around 20 times more harmful than CO2.

Solution

Cumbria County Council has chosen Shanks to develop and manage new waste and recycling facilities along with Cumbria’s existing household waste recycling centres (HWRCs).

Shanks propose to reduce the amount of waste to landfill by 80% by the development of the two resource parks & the improvements of all household waste recycling centres.

Technology

Shanks Intelligent Transfer Station

Shanks Intelligent Transfer Station is a proven Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) technology used in waste facilities across Europe and in the UK.

It maximises recycling recovery from general waste to meet and exceed Government targets.

The process produces a Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), which can be used in Industrial processes to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
